How to Spot Laminate Floor Water Damage

laminate wood flooring damage

Luckily, if your laminate wood floor is damaged you can replace only the effected pieces.

If you have laminate wood flooring in your home, you probably know all the advantages that come with this kind of flooring. It’s scratch resistant, it’s (mostly) resistant to water damage, and it’s easy to install. But the best thing about laminate wood floors? If your floor does happen to become water damaged, maybe from a sewer backup, you can simply remove the damaged pieces and replace them! Keep reading to find out how you can tell if your laminate wood floor has water damage, and what to do if it does.

How to Tell if Your Floor is Damaged

Technically, laminate wood floors are resistant to water damage, with one exception. If the laminate sits in water, like it would during a flood, and becomes saturated it will warp and start to show signs of damage. Signs such as splitting, cracking, buckling, and crowning or cupping are clear indicators that the board has water damage. If the edges of the board look puffy or swollen, that piece will need to be replaced, too.

What to Do

The beauty of laminate wood floors is that they are made in individual pieces. If the damage is contained to a small area, you may be able to pry up the old boards and install new ones. If the damage is more widespread, the best thing you can do is hire a professional water damage restoration company to asses the damage and repair the floor and anything else that may have been affected.
