Watch Out for Water Damage from an Open Window

water damage from ope window

A storm can sneak up and damage your home if you’ve forgotten to close your windows.

Labor Day is nearly here and with it comes the promise of cooler weather. The summer heat might stick around a little longer than we’d all like, but once it’s time to finally take out that window a/c unit you probably want to keep those windows open to catch that wonderful crisp breeze for as long as possible. The one danger to keeping windows open is the possibility of a passing storm while you aren’t home.

Structural Damage

Unless there’s a serious storm coming through, the water damage from raining entering an open window probably won’t reach past the window sill. If left to sit though, standing water can soak into window sills and cause them to rot over time. This type of damage can happen to windows with wooden frames. Most modern windows are made from plastics that mimic the look and feel of wood that will stand up to water damage better.

Any time water is allowed to sit on a porous surface, there’s a chance mold spores will latch on and start to grow. It’s easy to think a little water from a passing storm won’t cause much damage, but it doesn’t take much for mold to begin forming. Like we discussed recently, many people assume that drying standing water and cleaning any early signs of mold with common household cleaners will do the trick. If mold forms on your window sill or window frame, call a mold remediation company as early as possible to take care of this potential health risk.
