4 Tips for Preventing Home Water Damage

preventing home water damage

Preventing home water damage can be time-consuming, but it beats the alternative.

Sometimes water damage is unavoidable, but you can still do your best to prevent it. Taking the right preventative measures can mean the difference between a wet carpet and a flooded house. We have four tips to help you make sure water stays out of your house and how to make your home more resistant if it does.

Use Waterproof Building Materials

If your home is prone to flooding you should consider replacing some of the materials in that area of the house with waterproof building materials. Indoor/outdoor carpeting is great for basements that regularly get wet during heavy rain, and stainless-steel nails and water-resistant glues will last longer in wet areas.

Fix Plumbing

While a bit obvious, this point is still important. No matter how small a leak may seem it’s best to take care of it as soon as it’s noticed. A small leak is a sign of a growing problem that could turn into a full-fledged flooded floor.

Prevent Seepage

We talked a few weeks ago about tips for fighting backyard flooding. Keeping rainwater from seeping into your house takes a rainwater management system that works together. From clean gutters, properly directed downspouts, and a working sump pump, every part of the system needs to be checked regularly to ensure it’s working properly.

Raise It Up

The best way to protect your valuables, electronics specifically, is to get them up off the ground. Home theatre equipment and computers towers are usually placed on the floor because of their size. Getting these types of things even just a few inches off the ground can protect them from water damage in the event of flooding.
