Why Is There a Sewage Problem in Baltimore?

sewage problem in baltimore

Baltimore City estimates it will take nearly 30 years to repair the city’s sewage infrastructure.

Baltimore is a city prone to sewage backups that have caused headaches for a huge number of residents recently. There’s a complicated history to why this happens so often in the city, and will mostly likely continue to happen for the foreseeable future. But why is there a sewage problem in Baltimore?

Why Are There So Many Backups?

Back in the 1930s the city thought it was a better idea to allow the sewage system to overflow into waterways instead of having them become backed up. In 2002, though, federal regulators found the system to be in violation of the Clean Water Act. The city has been working since then to fix the backup problem, but says it will need till 2030 to complete the renovations. Their first step in complying with the Act was to cover nearly 60 structured overflow locations. Since there wasn’t a decrease in the demand on the sewer system, the wastewater began backing up into people’s homes instead.

What To Do If Your Sewer Backs Up

Don’t try to clean it up yourself! A sewer backup is a biohazard that can severely affect your health if it’s not dealt with properly. Call a professional water damage remediation company at the first sign of a problem. They will know how to deal with any issue in the safest way possible. Then it’s time to file an insurance claim.
