Signs That You May Have a Sewage Backup

Signs That You May Have a Sewage Backup

Watch out for these warning signs of sewage backup.

Whenever you have a sewage backup, it can result in severe damage and expensive repairs, as well as an overall smelly situation for you. Fortunately, there are warning signs you can detect that can help you prevent a sewage problem from getting out of hand. Getting a sewage fixed before it gets too bad will save you a lot of time and money. Watch out for these warning signs of sewage backup.

An Unpleasant Smell Coming From Your Drains

One day, you might be turning on your water in your bathroom as you usually do, and then you suddenly notice a foul odor coming from your drain. If you smell something funky, it could be a warning sign of sewage backup. Drains that go out of your home aren’t supposed to have an unpleasant odor.

Multiple Drains are Clogged

Pretty much everyone has had to deal with a clogged drain at some point. It’s usually caused by something fairly benign, such as excess hair or toilet paper. In cases like these, it’s a simple fix. But if you notice you have multiple drains clogged at once, it’s possible a sewage backup could be the problem. It’s even more of a concern if the clog is in a room that you don’t often use, such as your laundry room.

Bubbles

This warning sign is easy to detect. Whenever water tries getting past a clog inside of your drainpipe, you’ll see it bubble whenever it returns to the surface. Keep watch on things like bubbling toilets or sinks. If you see them bubble on several different instances after using them, it likely means a sewage backup is on the way.

Tree Roots

For people who own older houses, it’s possible that tree roots can impact your sewer lines. Tree roots can become the source of a sewage backup in your home. Be suspicious of a sewage backup if you notice your drains flowing more slowly or gurgling toilets. You want to address this problem as soon as you see it because the “root” of the problem will continue growing until it is properly addressed.

Toilets are Flushing Slowly

Watch to see if your toilets are flushing as efficiently as they have in the past. If they don’t flush as well as they used to flush, there could be something wrong with your sewer line. Plunging your toilet doesn’t resolve a problem like this, and you will most likely want to get professional help handling the situation.
