How To Repair A Flooded Basement

How To Repair A Flooded Basement
There are steps you can take to make sure you’re ready to clean up and repair your flooded basement.

When it storms outside, there’s enough going on to cause worry. Outdoor plants are at risk. It’s more dangerous to drive on roads. Sometimes, electrical power outages can occur too. You don’t want to have to worry about a flooded basement as well. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to make sure you’re ready to clean up and repair your flooded basement.

Keep Your Cool, But Think Fast

You’ve just noticed water in the basement. What do you do first?

First, you want to take photos of the scene. Photos of damaged items such as clothing, flooring, and furniture will be important for your insurance (if you are able to get flood insurance in your area).

Next, if you have any valuables that you want to get to higher ground, make sure to shut off power to your house before walking through standing water. Water is a powerful conductor of electricity, and walking through a wet flooded basement could be deadly.

Pump Up The Volume

After the storm is over, you will need to clean up the area. A sump pump is ideal for removing the water. If you don’t have one, a wet vac is another option. If your sump pump has failed and there’s still a good amount of standing water, use a garden hose to siphon the water until it starts flowin \g out. Remember though, this will only work if the exit is lower than the height of the standing water.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency advises that you remove just one-third of the water each day since removing more can cause structural problems to your home. This can cause the basement walls to collapse.

Dry As Much As You Can

After removing the water, dry everything as quickly as possible. This is especially important because mold, a health hazard, can start forming on damp objects. The longer you wait, the more time mold has to take over your home, so time is critical. Open doors and windows to accelerate the drying process. Using fans helps as well.

Get Necessary Tools

If the flooding is severe, it could spell out the end of your furniture and carpet. It’s possible you’ll need a dehumidifier or a portable heater. If you live in a humid area, you might need to remove the interior walls so you can remove growing mold. If you have to remove the interior walls, consider raising electrical outlets as a precaution for future floods.

Prepare For Future Flooding

It will be important to take precautions to prevent future flooding. Make sure your home’s drainage flows away from the building. It’s possible you’ll need an exterior waterproof membrane. This means you’ll need to dig a sort of moat, or call a crew to do it for you. Also, make sure to keep your gutters and downspouts free of debris to help divert water away from your home.
