How To Stay Safe While Using A Fire Pit

Learn how to use a fire pit safely.

We are in the middle of the summer which means it is the perfect time to take advantage of your backyard, especially at night.  Nothing is better than sitting around a fire pit with your friends and family on a nice summer night.  However, it is essential that you know how to operate a fire pit.  The last thing you want is a fire to erupt in your backyard.  Luckily, there are a few simple safety tips you can follow while using your fire pit.

Position and Prep

If you want to a safe fire pit experience, it all starts with the location of your fire pit.  Make sure that your fire pit is on level ground and is at least 10 to 20 feet from your home and other flammable structures such as plants.  It is essential that you are not operating your fire pit around any overhanging structure, especially branches. It is best to set your fire pit on concrete or brick and surround it with dirt or rocks to prevent any flames from escaping.  To keep the fire contained, make sure the pit is at least six inches deep and two feet across.

Lighting and Use

When it comes to lighting your fire pit, make sure to check the wind before hand.  You do not want to light the structure if it is too windy outside. It is critical that you do not use any flammable fluids to light your fire pit such as gasoline or lighter fluid.  It is best that you invest in a fire starter stick with kindling on top from your local home improvement store. When using your fire pit, never leave it unattended especially if there are children or pets around.  It is wise to invest in a cover or screen to keep any embers contained.

Putting It Out

It is essential that you have a shovel near your fire pit to put any flames out while it is in use.  When you want to put the fire out, all you have to do is drown it with water and stir it with a shovel to ensure it is extinguished.  Make sure that you are disposing of the ashes in a metal can.
