How to Make Sure Your Fireplace is Safe

Fireplaces are a great place to hang out in the colder months, just make sure it’s working properly.

Fireplaces are an attractive feature to have in the home during the fall and winter, but come with some concern for damage. You want to make sure that all the pieces of the fireplace and chimney are working correctly before settling down on the couch during the first really cold night of the season. Here are a few tips on how to make sure your fireplace is safe.

Check the Cap

The cap is the piece that sits on top of the chimney and ensures no rain, or wildlife, get into your home. If there is debris or bird’s nests on or around the cap there is a chance that smoke will not be able to escape properly. This could lead to smoke damage that can be difficult to clean and a lingering odor.

Check the Chimney

Head outside and check the chimney for any structural damage. Anything that looks suspicious should be corrected immediately. A crumbling chimney can cause a whole host of problems that require damage restoration services. If your fireplace is located in a central room in your house, you could need pack-out services to protect your valuables while the damage is fixed.

Check the Flue

Grab a flashlight and look up into the chimney. Check to make sure there aren’t any combustible materials caught in the flue, and that it’s opening and closing properly. A flue that doesn’t open completely won’t be able to let smoke escape and it will end up back in your home where it can cause nasty smoke damage.
