Everything You Need to Know About Summer Fire Prevention

Fire Prevention

Summer is a great time for grilling and having fun, but be sure to follow these fire prevention tips.

Home fires can, of course, occur at any time, but because of summer droughts and an increase in outdoor grilling or cooking indoors, fires are especially common during these warmer months. It’s easy to forget about the threat of summer fires when you’re busy enjoying all the benefits of this amazing weather. You may even forget about your grill or oven which can spark a fire and cause serious damage to your home. Here are some tips for fire prevention this summer.

No-Burn Advisories

Listen to your local news stations and fire departments regarding no-burn advisories as they can be crucial in fire prevention. They’re rare in this area, but if one were to happen it means no burning of any kinds of items, including firepits. If a single hot ember gets blown in the wrong direction, it could lead to a serious fire. Maryland has an annual open air burning ban from June 1st to September 1st and while it only bans material burning and not recreational fires, it’s still an important thing to remember. It impacts the counties of Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Carroll, Cecil, Charles, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Montgomery, and Prince George’s, plus Baltimore City.

Be Mindful

The cooking area is often a cause of fires. Children or animals may knock over a hot pan full of food or an oil filled fryer, which could cause a major fire. Be sure an adult is constantly keeping an eye on any food that is being cooked, whether it’s inside your home or out. A big part of fire prevention is paying attention to your surroundings.

Watch for Children

Children can often be the cause of fires. Since they’re all out of school for the summer, be sure to keep an eye on your matches and lighters as you don’t want mischievous hands getting on them and then causing a fire. You should also teach your children basic fire safety, and this summer is a great time for that. This is especially important if they’re going to be in the kitchen while you cook.
