3 Fall Fire Safety Tips

House Fire

Practice fire safety during the whole fall season.

Fall is officially here, and outdoor temperatures will begin to decrease causing all of us to warm up our homes.  With everyone heating up their homes, we are all at risk for creating potential fire hazards.  According to the American Red Cross, there is a drastic increase in the number of reported house fires du

ring the fall and winter months.  Fortunately, there are few simple ways you can prevent a home fire and costly damage to your property this fall season.

Check Your Heating System

Whether you have a furnace or a heat pump, you should check your heating system early in the fall before it gets extremely cold outside.  Most heating systems have been sitting untouched for about six months, so you need to make sure everything is working properly.  If you have a furnace, you should replace the filters regularly and clean the entire area of dirt and debris.  The last thing you want is a fire starting because you forgot to change out your furnace filter.

Change Batteries and Check Fire Extinguishers

Fall is the best time to make sure all of your items that can prevent a fire are up and running properly.  You should replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors every fall and spring season when you change the clocks for Daylight Savings Time.  Fall is a great time to locate all of your fire extinguishers and check if they are fully charged.  You should have at least one fire extinguisher in your home. For good measure, keep them in rooms where potential fire hazards can occur such as the kitchen and near the fireplace.

Home Fire Safety Plan

You and everyone that is living in your home should develop a fire safety plan in case an emergency arises.  Make sure everyone knows where each fire extinguisher is and that they know how to use it.  You plan out an evacuation route in the case of fire and determine a space outside the home where everyone should meet.
