What Spring Home Maintenance Do I Need?

baltimore servicemaster disaster restorationLike our annual health check-up with a doctor, our homes need regular inspection and maintenance to run smoothly. While this time of year often revolves around spring cleaning, ServiceMaster of Baltimore wants to remind you of some spring maintenance your home needs. Our over 60 years of experience with disaster restoration in Baltimore has shown us how important preventative maintenance is to preventing property loss. Check out these spring home maintenance tasks we recommend.

Clear Gutters and Debris Around the Home

Gutters should be cleaned before and after the leaves have finished falling from the trees. Gutters redirect rainwater away from the home to protect the foundation, so it’s important to keep them clear to prevent water damage and erosion. In addition to clogged gutters, winter leaves behind a lot of natural debris in gardens and lawns, so be sure to remove unwanted leaves to keep your home’s appearance pristine.

Inspect the Roof

Spring is a good time to inspect the insulation in the attic or eaves of your home to avoid problems caused by insufficient temperature regulation over the winter. Wooden structures can degrade over time, so be sure to visually inspect the roof and other wooden fixtures to prevent water damage before summer storms hit.

Change Filters Throughout the Home

Many modern “smart” thermostats have features to remind you to change the HVAC filters, but what about filters in other appliances? For example, if your refrigerator has a water dispenser, it probably has a filter that needs to be changed on a regular basis. Some kitchen range hoods have removable filters that become caked with grease over time, which can affect the efficiency of the exhaust system. It might be a good idea to get out the owner’s manuals for your large appliances and check whether the manufacturer recommends filter replacement or other maintenance.

Inspect Basement for Cracks and Moisture

A basement with excessive moisture is a breeding ground for mold. Water can enter the basement through cracks that are difficult to see, especially in a dimly-lit area. If you discover cracks in the walls, consult with a professional basement restoration specialist to keep your home protected from mildew, mold, and water damage.
