How To Deal With A Water Damaged Carpet

Water Damaged Carpet
Here’s how to treat water damaged carpet.

Whether you own a house or an apartment, you are likely very aware of the problems water damage can cause. Flooding issues can occur and damage your carpet, leading to issues with mold that can cause health problems for you and your family. Fortunately, just because your carpet has experienced some water damage doesn’t mean that all is lost. Here are some steps you can take to minimize some issues with your carpet.

Take A Look & Remove The Water

In the same way as you would with other issues, the first step you should take in this situation is assessing the damage. Before you take any action, you need to know exactly what you’re dealing with. During this assessment process, you need to make sure to gauge where the damage is coming from and what type of water is covering your carpet. If the water is from a storm or any sanitary source, your carpet can most likely be salvaged. In the case that it’s unsanitary black water, there can be deeper issues. Either way, you may want to call a professional to extract the water from your carpet.

Dry Your Carpet

The next step of the process is to ensure the carpet is dry. You should get some large fans and keep them blowing in the room with the carpet to ensure that it’s dry and that air is circulating well in the area. After about 36 hours, you should do another assessment of your carpet to see whether it needs any additional work. Also, ensure that you use a dehumidifier during this process so you can stop mold from growing.

Steam Clean Your Carpet

After your carpet has been sufficiently dried, you should clean it to make sure you’ve taken care of any lingering issues that might still be there. Make sure that your not only steam cleaning your carpet but that you’re also deodorizing it as well. Water damage can cause issues with mold and mildew so it’s important to make sure you clean your carpet well. Also, make sure that you replace the padding under your carpet if there was any there before.
