Preventing Water Damage This Spring

Prevent Spring Water Damage
Use these tips to prevent water damage this spring.

Spring is here, which means your home will have to deal with a good amount of rain. While you might not mind the shift in weather, it can be particularly damaging to your home if it hasn’t been maintained properly. Specifically, if your home isn’t prepared for the sudden influx of precipitation, water can come into your home and cause significant water damage. Here are some ways you can stop water damage from happening to your home this spring.

Focus On Your Walls & Siding

Your home’s walls and siding need to be in good condition to ensure water damage doesn’t happen to your home. If there are any imperfections or other issues with your walls and siding, it can be much easier for water damage to occur. In addition, you should make sure to remove branches and shrubs that are touching your siding because they can trap moisture.

Clean Your Gutters

Cleaning your gutters is essential, especially if you forgot to do it last fall! Leaves and other debris can pile up in your gutters, making the likelihood of them clogging much higher. This may seem like a relatively small issue, but when a particularly bad storm comes through the area it’ll prove to be significant. In some cases, water can spill out of your gutters onto your siding. Make sure that your home’s downspouts are directing water five to ten feet away from your home for the best results.

Test Your Sump Pump

Your home’s sump pump is a device that’s usually located in your basement. Its job is to prevent your home from flooding and ultimately to keep it dry. Water flows into your sump pump and the device pumps the water away from your home. It’s vital to test your sump pump regularly to make sure it’s working well. A malfunctioning sump pump can lead to your basement flooding, which could result in water damage. Don’t wait until a bad storm happens before you check to see if your sump pump is in good condition. Spring is the perfect time to take a look at it so you can ensure it’ll work all season long.
