Uh oh. Someone forgot to turn the stove off or fell asleep with a casserole in the oven and now your kitchen and dining room reek of smoke. Thankfully there wasn’t any physical damage, but that smell isn’t going anywhere on its own. Here are a few tips for removing smoke odor in your home, but if there’s any damage you’re unsure of call a professional fire and smoke damage remediation company.
When the fire happened it filled your house with smoke. It filled all the little nooks and crannies that you can’t reach with a vacuum, rag, or mop. The only way to clean the smoke smell out of these areas is to use a strong, industrial fan to flush your house with fresh air. Set the fan up near an open door facing into your home. It’s best to do this on a cool, dry day as any humidity can make the smoke smell worse.
If you don’t already have one you’ll need to either buy or rent a high-quality air filter. A commercial strength air filter will help remove the particles from the air that cause the smoke smell, along with any other dust and pollens that might be floating around.
Remove all drapes, furniture coverings, rugs and other fabrics and throw them into the wash. It may take a few washes to get the smell out, but a strong detergent will help. All of the hard surfaces need to be wiped down and cleaned, too. Walls, floors, counters, tables, couches, chairs and eve light fixtures need to be cleaned even if you gave them a once over to remove any soot.
