In honor of the wonderful time of year when the kids head back to school, we have the ABC’s of home water damage for you. Here are the basics you need to know incase you experience water damage.
Stop the Flow of Water
First, you need to stop the flow of water into the damaged area by closing your main water valve. This will shut off all water to your house until you can isolate the problem area.
Naturally, you’ll want to start moving your stuff out of the damaged area as quickly as possible. Before you do, you should take pictures of anything that looks damaged for use in your insurance claim. Generally, the more pictures the better, since you will need to supply proof that your valuables were damaged as a result of the water damage.
Save Your Valuables
Anything that hasn’t yet been damaged but is still at risk should be moved to a safe location. Even things that have been slightly damaged should be moved, but only after taking pictures for the insurance adjuster.
