Stopping Water Damage From Pipes and Appliances

Water Damage

Here are some tips from ServiceMaster of Baltimore to help you prevent water damage from your pipes or appliances.

Water damages are pretty common among homeowners insurance claims. It can come as the result of a flood or storm, but there are also more nefarious ways you can experience water damage. Your appliances or pipes may turn against you, especially when not well maintained, and end up damaging parts of your home. We here at ServiceMaster of Baltimore don’t want you to have to face the headache that is trying to recover from water damage, so here are some tips to stop water damage from pipes and appliances ever being a problem.

Sinks, Showers, and Bathtubs

You should be inspecting the area under the kitchen and bathroom sinks with a flashlight every few months. If you notice any signs of leaks or rust, immediately call a plumber. You’ll want to check in showers and bathtubs for discoloration or swelling which could be a sign of water leaks. If you see any cracks or mold in the caulking, make sure you recaulk the area as soon as you can.

Checking Appliances

Your washing machine and dishwasher should both have the hoses replaced every three years to be safe. You want high-pressure, metal-mesh hoses. They’re durable and long-lasting so you won’t need to worry about them getting as damaged as other kinds of hoses. Make sure all of the connections in your home are properly secured. If you have an automatic icemaker in your fridge, be careful when pulling the refrigerator out, as kinks in the hose or pipe could lead to water damage.

Preventative Measures

It’s important that you take note of where your main water shutoff is. If you ever have an emergency and can’t get ahold of a recovery service or plumber, you may need to shut the water off yourself. If you’re going away from your home for more than a week, it may be wise to shut off all of the water in your house for that time, as it could prevent unexpected leaks or water damage.
