Stopping Basement Flooding in Its Tracks

Basement Flooding

Basements are prone to flooding and water damage. Stop it before it starts.

If you’ve ever experienced flooding, you know how absolutely maddening it can be. It can take weeks to recover from a bad enough basement flood, so it’s important to tackle the problem head on. We’ve been getting a lot of spring showers here lately, so ServiceMaster of Baltimore has come up with a few tricks to help prevent your basement from flooding. Dealing with a flood? ServiceMaster can help. Until then, read on for some tricks to help prevent basement flooding.

Keeping Gutters and Downspouts in Shape

Let’s be honest here. No one wants to clean out the gutters. It’s an annoying chore that can last seemingly forever. It’s pretty important though, as poorly maintained gutters can lead to all kinds of water damage in every room in your home. Check all of your downspouts and gutters regularly if you don’t want your basement flooding!

Practice Simple Landscaping

This might seem a bit extreme and out there, but believe it or not? The shape of your flower bed or even the slope of your yard can contribute to basement flooding. It may be directing water towards your basement. Check the status of your lawn and see if everything can be done, and if not, consider investing in some French drains.

Maintain Your Sump Pump

Sump pump failure is one of the most frequent causes of basement flooding. If you don’t own a sump pump, definitely get one. But beyond simply owning one, you need to maintain it as well. If a huge storm is headed your way, make sure your sump pump is plugged in and working properly. If you want, you can even invest in a backup generator to keep your sump pump working even when the power isn’t. Don’t let water seep into your home and cause dangerous mold–use a sump pump!
