Simple Ways To Prevent Your Basement From Flooding

Basement Flooding

Learn how to prevent your basement from flooding.

It is the start of the fall season, which means the potential for serious storms and heavy rain fall.  As a homeowner, you have to prepare your home for storms so that you can prevent flooding and water damage.  The one area of your home that is highly susceptible to flooding is your basement.  The last thing you want is to pay for costly remediation services to recover your basement from severe flooding and damage.  Luckily, there are a few simple ways you can prevent your basement from flooding.

Inspect and Care For Your Sump Pump

If your home experiences excess groundwater, then you are in need of a sump pump.  The machine works as needed to push water away from your home to prevent flooding and water damage.  If you have a sump pump, it is critical that you are inspecting it and make sure it is working properly, especially before a storm hits your home.  If you are expecting a serious storm or heavy rainfall, you want to invest in a generator just in case you lose power.

Clean Gutters and Downspouts

When it comes to preventing your basement from flooding, you need to start with cleaning your gutters and downspouts.  It is common for leaves and debris to build up in your gutters during the fall, but you need to clear them out to prevent clogging.  If your gutters are clogged during a storm, then water can overflow on to the sides of your home and seep into your basement. You also want to make sure your downspout is clear of any debris and is directing water at least five feet away from your home’s foundation.

Inspect and Repair Your Foundation

If you want to prevent your basement from flooding, you need to take care of your home properly.  This requires you to walk around the exterior of your home and inspect your foundation closely. Go inside your basement and inspect your walls and floors for any cracks.  The last thing you want is water to seep through cracks. So, all you have to do is fill the cracks with epoxy. If you have a more serious problem than cracks, you should call a professional service.
