Preventing House Fires With Fall Clean Up

preventing home fire damageWith the changing of the seasons often comes the time to clean up things around the home, and there’s more to fall cleanup than raking the leaves and cleaning the gutters. What about cleaning inside the home, such as cleaning your appliances? All home appliances should be receiving regular maintenance, but here are three that can be added to your fall cleanup list.

Your Dryer

Despite regularly cleaning your lint trap after running your dryer, lint will still get caught inside the dryer exhaust vent—it’s inevitable. Over time, this rogue lint will begin to build up inside the exhaust vent (or the machine itself), posing a fire hazard when mixed with hot air from the dryer. Additionally, the indoor pollutants caused by the dust buildup in ducts can potentially increase the chances of getting sick during the colder months.

Although it’s important that the exhaust be cleaned by a professional every six to 12 months, you can vacuum around the dryer vent area on a regular basis to prevent excess build up. You can even purchase a cleaning kit for your dryer for less than $30.

Your Oven

If you only cleaned your oven once a year, it should be during your fall cleanup—just before the start of the holiday season. Over time, food from baking becomes charred and oil and grease stick to the walls and racks inside your oven. Not only does this cause odor when you cook, it helps prevent an oven fire and keeps the appliance running in peak condition.

The best part about cleaning your oven is how easy it is, as most are self-cleaning. During this time, it’s a good idea to clean underneath and around the appliance for removal of crumbs and dust.

Your Furnace

Fall is around the time that you’ll be looking to turn on the heat in your home. It’s important to get your furnace professionally serviced each year: once in the warmer months when you turn on your air conditioning, and once in the cooler months when you switch to heating your home. Annual maintenance is important for oil furnaces as well. Not only does annual furnace maintenance prevent potential fires, but regularly maintaining your HVAC system can help keep good air quality inside your home.

Call The Professionals

Although you can perform regular maintenance on these appliances on your own, they will always still require professional servicing annually, and some even biannually. Call ServiceMaster of Baltimore for your appliance cleaning needs, at 410-780-1700.
