How to Prevent Water Damage In Your Home This Summer

Water Damage

Learn how to prevent water damage in your home this summer.

The Baltimore area is currently experiencing an influx of rain and flooding.  So, it is critical that you keep your family and home safe this summer.  Excessive rainfall makes your home vulnerable to water damage which can lead to expensive repairs.  The last thing you want is to have a roof leak occur while you are on vacation.  Luckily, there are a few simple tips for preventing water damage this summer.

Clean Your Gutters

One of the most effective ways to preventing water damage this summer is to clean out your gutter.  With it raining excessively this summer, you want to make sure that the water is running quickly out of your downspout.  If there is leaves or debris in your gutters, then the blockage can cause water to overflow on to the sides of your home.  This can lead to mold on your home side and damage to the foundation. So, all you have to do is take a scoop and clear your gutters of all debris.

Check Your Water Bill

Many times water damage occurs in small, hidden areas and homeowners only notice the damage when it is apparent.  Small leaks in your home can turn into costly water damage without you even knowing when they occurred. One of the best ways to determine the existence of a small leak is to check your water bill thoroughly throughout the summer.  If your water bill is drastically higher than normal, a leak is highly likely.

Secure Your Home During Vacation

It is common for families to leave home and go on long vacations during the summer.  If you are going away for a week or longer, it is critical that you go through the steps to keep your home safe.  Make sure you lock and shut all of the doors, windows, and other entrance ways in your home to prevent water from entering.  If you are home will be vacant for an extended period this summer, turn off the main water valve to prevent any major water damage.
