How To Prevent Exterior Water Damage

Learn how to prevent exterior water damage.

We are in the middle of October which means there will be an increase in rain and snow coming our way.  If you do not prepare and care for your home properly, water can seep in and cause serious water damage.  So, you want to make sure that the exterior of your home is structurally sound and can stand up well to all of the elements.  Luckily, there are a few simple ways to preventing exterior water damage.

Check Your Walls

When it comes to preventing exterior home water damage, you want to focus on your walls/siding.  You want to ensure that your siding material and structure within the wall are in pristine condition.  Make sure you are inspecting your home siding and making repairs as needed. It is essential that you are removing any shrubs or branches that are touching your home siding because they can trap moisture on your siding.

Clear Your Gutters

One of the most important aspects of preventing exterior water damage is clearing out your gutters, especially during the fall.  You want to ensure that your gutters are free of any leaves or debris. The last thing you want is your gutter clogging during a storm causing water to spill out of the sides onto your siding.  Your downspout should be directing water at least five feet away from your home’s foundation.

Proper Ventilation

If you want to prevent exterior water damage, you need to make sure that your attic is properly ventilated.  It is common for heat rising into the attic to cause snow to melt unevenly, which can lead to ice dams that obstruct your roof.  So, you want to ensure there is adequate ventilation in your roof so that air is flowing freely. You want to make sure that your roof is uniformly cold.
