Prepare for Spring Flooding to Prevent Water Damage

Prepare for spring flooding

Don’t get washed away with overwhelming water damage this spring!

The weather in Maryland is…unpredictable, to say the least. You get a week of gorgeous mid-to-upper-70’s in the beginning of March, and you have an Orioles’ game postponed due to snow and “unseasonable cold” in the first week of April. While we’re in the throes of early spring, prolonged spring showers and sudden storms can lead to flash flooding, which can in turn lead to water damage. Here are some ways to prepare for spring flooding so your home (and your budget) isn’t underwater this season.

Preparing Your Home to Defend Against Water Damage

When spring storms roll in, don’t let yourself fall victim to spring water damage. Take these precautions to prepare for spring flooding.

  • Clean the Gutters! One of the most common sources of springtime water damage is from failure to clean the gutters. Gutters are there to help whisk water away from your home, but when it’s full of leaves and other debris, it does just the opposite. Water pools and accumulates and has a much higher chance of finding its way through your roof into your home. Good thing we wrote a whole blog post about cleaning gutters last month!
  • Take Inventory. No, we don’t mean count the cans of soup in your pantry. We mean that you need to assess the current state of your home and its water damage preparedness. Make sure that your sump pump is working properly to keep water out of your lower levels, and make sure that all output from drains and gutters is far enough away from your home that it doesn’t pose a threat to your foundation.
  • Take a Walk. While we’re on the topic of foundation, you should also take a walk around your home to look at any visible or easily accessible areas of your foundation, to make sure there aren’t already any cracks that can forebode or indicate water damage.
  • Give Your Seal of Approval. Your house is your fortress against spring storms. Don’t let any of that dastardly rainwater into your home by sealing off every possible point of entry. It’s never a bad idea to inspect your roof, windows, and pipes to make sure there aren’t any leaks that might catch you off-guard.

Of course, even despite best efforts to prepare for spring flooding, sometimes Mother Nature gets the best of us. If you do suffer water damage this spring, be sure to give us a call as quickly as possible to come fix it up.
