How To Keep Your Home Safe From Fire This Holiday Season

Follow these simple holiday fire safety tips.

We are officially in November which means the holiday season is right around the corner.  While you are planning for Thanksgiving and Christmas, you have to take fire safety into consideration.  According to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), open-flame fires more than double on Christmas compared to an average day.  So, you need to be careful when making a holiday meal or lighting candles.  Luckily, there are a few fire safety tips to follow this holiday season.

Be Cautious While Cooking

During the holiday season, it is critical that you are cautious and take your time while cooking.  According to the USFA, cooking is one of the top causes of holiday fires, largely due to food being unattended.  So, it is essential that you stay in the kitchen while you are using the stove or oven. Make sure that you are cleaning up all grease spills, especially those next to the stove.  If you are deep frying a turkey this holiday season, make sure it is outside on a flat surface at least 10 feet from your house.

Focus On Your Fireplace

As we approach the holidays, it will be getting colder and colder outside, so you will likely want to light up your fireplace.  Before you set up your fireplace to stay warm this winter, you may want to get it professionally inspected and cleaned. When using your fireplace, make sure that you have a screen in front of it to prevent embers from popping onto your floor.  It is critical that you are burning seasoned wood in your fireplace.

It is common to light candles during the holiday season, especially if you are lighting a menorah to celebrate Hanukkah.  However, make sure that you are never leaving any flames unattended. According to the USFA, Christmas/ Christmas Eve and New Year’s/ New Year’s Eve are the four most dangerous days for residential candle fires.  So, make sure you are blowing out every candle before leaving a room or going to bed.
