How to Remove Graffiti From Your Building

vandalism graffiti removal baltimoreTo some, graffiti is art, but to property owners, it is often considered vandalism. Whether you’re the victim of unwanted graffiti or struggle to remove existing spray paint from a surface, it is important to act quickly and know the right materials to use. Removing graffiti from wood, metal, and concrete is possible with the right tools and cleaning products. ServiceMaster of Baltimore has experience restoring buildings with graffiti so you’ll never know it was there and has some recommendations for removing graffiti effectively.

Tip 1: Use a Pressure Washer on Metal, Brick, and Stone

Using a pressure washer is a perfect solution to remove graffiti on specific surfaces such as metal and sometimes even wood. Be careful when operating on wood because the pressure can push the paint deeper into the material. Pressure washing works best for unadorned brick and stone surfaces, but make sure to use a wide-angle nozzle for spraying. A small concentrated nozzle can damage a brick surface, especially historic masonry. Focus on the whole area, not just the vandalized sections, to prevent etching the graffiti outline into the surface.

Tip 2: Use Paint Thinner

Paint thinners such as WD-40 or acetone are great solutions on metal surfaces.  But make sure to evaluate the affected area before using a paint thinner because it could further damage the material. Delicate surfaces such as wood will erode if come in contact with paint thinners, so owners of historic buildings or have predominantly wooden surfaces should have a plan in place to act quickly if struck by graffiti. Always remember to use appropriate PPE when using these solvents to prevent skin damage.

Tip 3: Repaint

If all else fails, the best option is to just paint over the graffiti, but you will have to repaint the entire surface. It is important to paint over the surface a couple times to prevent the graffiti from bleeding through.  Make sure to pick paint that best matches your surface. It is best consult with a contractor or graffiti removal service for proper removal.
