Go through the proper precautions to protect your home from an impending storm.

Fall has officially started meaning an increase of leaves in your yard, but also the chance of a severe storm coming in and damaging your home.  Torrential rainstorms and hurricanes can cause home water damage leaving you with high restoration costs.  It is crucial to examine your home and take the proper precautions to minimize the risk of storm damage.  There are simple tasks you can complete to prevent storms from causing permanent damage.

Check All Drainage Systems

Nothing is worse than having water from a clogged a gutter or drain damaging your home’s foundation during a storm.  Clogged gutters can cause water to seep over the sides and right onto the sides of your home.  It is important to inspect your gutters for any clogs or leaks so that water can drain properly away from your home.  Also, check any other drainage outlets around your home and in your yard.

Don’t Forget Your Roof

It is essential to occasionally inspect your roof during the changing of seasons especially if your roof is five years or older.  Check for loose shingles and nails because a severe storm can cause pieces of your roof to fly off creating space for rain to penetrate into your home.  If you happen to find any cracks or signs of leakage in your roof, it is crucial to get it fixed immediately.  Also for good measure, apply sealing around your chimney or any vent pipes to prevent home water damage.

Latch-Up All Doors and Windows

In preparation for an impending storm, it is vital for all of your doors and windows to be sealed extremely tight.  The last thing you want is a strong gust of wind blowing open one of your doors leaving your home and even yourself in danger.  It is recommended to invest in or make your own storm shutters for all doors and windows during a storm.
