How to Prevent Water Damage in Your Garage

Prevent Water Damage

Garages are a common place for flood damage to occur, but it is preventable.

Thanks to the spring weather, we’ve had a few storms recently. You might be focused on your whimpering dog or wondering if you should brave the storm and go buy groceries or not, but a bad storm can mean flooding as well. Garages, in particular, are one of the areas of your home most susceptible to floods. Luckily, we’ve got some tips to prevent water damage in your garage.

Good Drainage

Making sure water can flow away from your home is the best way to prevent water damage. To do this, check all of the gutters and drains around your garage. You may also want to install French drains in front of your garage or driveway to transport excess water away from your garage. You can also use flood vents. Flood vents are meant to protect your garage from water damage by actually letting water flow through your garage, as your garage doors can’t withstand the force exerted by floodwaters.

Checking For Problems

It’s important to inspect your garage before a large storm. Look for any cracks or damage in your foundation and seal them if possible. If there are larger cracks that you cannot maintain, you may need to contact a professional contractor. If you don’t have weatherstripping around your garage door, it may be a good idea to invest in that as well. But if you do have weatherstripping, you may want to check it for cracks or damage; weatherstripping should be replaced every few years.

Dealing With Major Floods

You’ve taken all the precautions you can to prevent water damage, but it’s still possible that a massive storm will take you by surprise. In these cases, there are few options you have left. You can try to invest in flood barriers or sandbags to act as small dams to prevent flooding. You may want to move any valuables out of your garage as well. If your garage ends up water damaged anyway, contact a restoration professional to help you recover from flooding.
