How to Prepare for a Natural Disaster

Disaster

Disaster preparation can be just as important as recovery and help prevent damage to yourself and your possessions.

If a storm, hurricane, or tornado is coming your way, you need to practice proper preparedness to make sure everyone is safe and reduce damage as much as you can.  It’s important not to panic or let yourself feel hopeless, as there are many precautions you can take that will help alleviate your stresses. Don’t let a natural disaster catch you off your guard, follow these tips from us at ServiceMaster of Baltimore to keep yourself as safe as possible and make restoration even easier.

Preventing Flooding or Water Damage

There are a number of ways you can prevent flooding or water damage that can come as the result of a natural disaster. First, you’ll want to move any valuables or sensitive electronics to the top floor of your home. Basements or first floor levels are particularly prone to flooding, so you’ll want to make sure your valuables aren’t in a place susceptible to water damage. Sand bags can also help prevent water from seeping into specific places. You may also want to invest in a sump pump to get rid of excess water if needed.

Develop a Plan

Beyond preventing your home from damage, you must consider your own safety as well. Have an evacuation plan in place. Map out a route that you can to get to a relative’s home or a government-determined safety zone. Before you leave your home, you may want to shut off the utilities as they can just lead to more damage in your house. Getting out of your home in order to keep yourself safe is a bigger priority than saving whatever is in your home, so don’t hesitate to bug out if you need to.

Packing Supplies

You’ll want to pack a go-bag in case you need to leave your home quickly. This includes a change of clothes, insurance information, phone numbers for family members, friends, and even a disaster recovery company, toiletries, and some money. Likewise, you’ll want to store some extra food in your home at all times in case you ever need it.
