How to Deal with Flood Damage

flood damage baltimore maryland restorationWater is vital to our survival, but it is also one of the most destructive substances we come into contact with. When your home or business floods, you’re left to deal with not just excess water, but potential mold, structural damage, loss of belongings, and even displacement. Fortunately, ServiceMaster of Baltimore has over 60 years of experience helping homeowners in Baltimore deal with flood damage. Here’s what you need to know when dealing with a flood disaster.

Stop the Water At Its Source

If your home or business floods as a result of a burst pipe, sewage backup, or something within your control, turn off the water supply above the problem. In some cases, you may need to cut off the supply to the entire property, so make sure you know where your main shutoff valve is located in case of emergency.

Of course, if the flooding is a result of a natural disaster like a hurricane, it’s not possible to simply turn off the source!

Remove Excess Water

If you have homeowners or flood insurance, your first step after the flooding event should be to call your agent to begin the claims process. Then, you’ll need to decide how to begin restoring your property. You can sometimes remove the water yourself, but large jobs like a sewage backup, basement flood, or structural damage usually require professionals.

Dry the Area and Assess Further Damage

Restoration doesn’t stop when the water is removed. Safely returning to your home requires drying out the area, removing damaged belongings like upholstery, clothing, food, and other items that are not safe to keep after water damage. Mildew and mold, plus viruses and bacteria living in the contaminated flood water, pose a serious risk to your health and must be handled properly. You’ll also need to assess the entire property for damage you cannot see, such as electrical work behind walls and ensuring the foundation is stable.
