Harmful Effects of Smoke Damage to You and your Home

Smoke damage is of great concern and should not be taken lightly.

We all know that fire can be dangerous, but did you know smoke can be harmful too? In fact, smoke causes more deaths during fires than the fire itself. Asphyxiation is the most common cause of death in fire situations, happening about three times as often as dying from burns from a fire. When a property catches fire, it creates gases that cause people to feel tired and disoriented. With prolonged exposure to smoke, people lose consciousness, leaving them unable to escape the fire. Smoke damage is of great concern and should not be taken lightly.

How Smoke Affects People

Smoke irritates people’s noses, eyes, and throats, and the odor is foul and can cause nausea. If people are exposed to too much smoke, their lungs won’t function as well as they usually would, and it becomes harder for people to breathe as a result. People can become less alert and suffer from headaches as well as a heart condition called angina. Try to avoid too much smoke to prevent smoke damage to your body. If you can’t avoid it, try limiting your physical exertion.

Smoke Damage On Property

Smoke damage doesn’t just affect people; it can affect your home and belongings too. Smoke damage is one of the things to worry about when you have a house fire. No matter what the size of the fire is, big or small, smoke will spread throughout your home. Initially, the smoke will create an unpleasant scent while the smoke goes through your pipelines and into the cooler areas of your house. But that isn’t where smoke damage stops.

After the fire has been put out, you will need to replace all of the items that have been impacted by smoke damage. Because water is often the solution for fire problems, your home will be soaked. This means you will need to clean and dry your home. You have to do this inside of 48 hours or else you run the risk of mold growing in your house. If you let mold grow in your home, you will soon have another health hazard that will also require your immediate attention.
