Freeze-Proof Exterior Faucets

burst-pipeEven the most fearless DIY person shudders at the thought of a burst water pipe. If not immediately noticed, a ruptured pipe can be both expensive and time consuming to clean up.

Fortunately, the pipe that’s most susceptible to extremely cold weather—the outdoor hose faucet—is also one of the easiest to protect from freezing. Turning off the water supply to your outdoor faucets is the first step. You can usually find these in your basement or sometimes under your sink; now would be a good time to label them. Most people think this is sufficient for winterizing the outdoor faucets. What many people forget is to drain the pipes. Remember, even though you have shut off the water supply to the faucet, there is still water in the pipes. This becomes especially hazardous if any of your pipes are partially exposed. To remedy this, go outside and turn the faucet on (after you shut off the water valve). Any water left inside the pipes will drain out. This will help prevent burst pipes in the middle of winter.

One other quick remedy is to replace an existing hose faucet with a freeze-proof faucet. You can do it yourself in just a few hours.
