According to the United States Fire Administration, approximately 33 million homes will have a natural Christmas tree this year. But did you know that your Christmas tree poses a real threat to you and your family? Well, believe it or not, it does!
For a visual representation of how real this threat actually is, check out this great video clip from the U.S. Fire Administration. It illustrates what happens when fire touches a dry tree.
Every year, Christmas trees account for 250 fires, resulting in 14 deaths, 26 injuries and more than $13.8 million in property damage. Because of this, it is important that you follow the below safety tips this Holiday Season:
1) Choose a fresh, green tree with needles that do not fall off when touched.
2) Cut 1-2 inches from the base of your tree trunk before placing it in the stand.
3) Make sure the tree is at least 3 feet away from any heat source.
4) Use lights that are made for interior use.
5) Add water to the tree daily.
It only took the dry Christmas tree in the above video five seconds to become completely engulfed in flames. And it only took 40 seconds for those flames to spread throughout the room. Conversely, a tree in a stand with at least a 7.6 liter water capacity that is watered daily is almost impossible to set ablaze.
REMEMBER, A WET TREE IS A SAFE TREE!
