A Few Common Home Fire Hazards

Be aware of these common home fire hazards.

You and your family are watching television in the living room, then all of a sudden the smoke alarm goes off from inside the kitchen.  Home fires can happen in seconds, and you have to be prepared in any situation.  According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), in 2015 77 percent of structure fires occurred in homes.  If you want to avoid putting out a home fire, you need to be aware of common fire hazards and how to prevent each one.

Cooking

Cooking is the number one cause of residential fires, so it essential that you are aware of your surroundings when you are in the kitchen.  If you are cooking food on the stove, do not leave it unattended. If you have to leave the kitchen for any reason while cooking, make sure to turn the stove off.  In the case of a grease fire, do not throw water on it to put it out; use a lid to smother the fire.

Appliances

When it comes to home fire hazards, you need to look out for your home appliances.  Dryers are the leading cause of appliance fire, so you need to be cautious when doing your laundry.  After you use your dryer, make sure to clean out the lint trap. A build-up of lint in the filter is the main cause of dryer fires.  Make sure never to use the dryer without a filter.

Candles

Even though candles are small items, they are one of the leading causes of home fires.  According to the NFPA, between 2009 and 2013, candles started an average of 9,300 house fires and accumulated $374 million in property damage.  When burning a candle, make sure it is 12 inches from any flammable items. It is critical that you are putting out candles once you ready to leave a room.  The last thing you want is for a small incense candle burning down your home.
