Climate Change is Leading to More Natural Disasters :: Disaster Restoration

Instances of extreme weather are increasing all across the United States. In fact, natural disasters – tornadoes, floods, droughts, hurricanes, and wildfires – caused more damage in 2011 ($200 billion) than ever previously recorded.

2011 Natural Disaster Facts and Stats

-Hurricane Irene killed 45 people and inflicted $7.3 billion in damage.

-The Midwest and Northern Plains saw record floods from snowmelt and torrential rainfall that swelled the Mississippi, Ohio and Missouri Rivers.

-Seven states in the Northeast and the Ohio Valley saw their annual rainfall increase by as much as 8 inches above normal.

-In 2011, Texas experienced its greatest drought ever while also experiencing wildfires that destroyed over 1,500 homes.

-Nearly 60% of the nation plunged into drought last year, another record.
-2011 saw the Midwest and Southeast experience 1,155 tornadoes, killing more than 300 people and causing $20 billion in damage.

-The U.S. experienced a total of 14 natural disasters that cost more than $1 billion each, breaking yet another new record.

-2011 was the 11th warmest year on record.

And there is no end in sight to this increase in extreme weather. Climate scientists anticipate an uptick in natural disasters as the global climate continues to climb.

“You can see there’s a train wreck coming and it has to do with Mother Nature,” said Margaret Davidson, director of the Coastal Services Center for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
