The Dangers of Black Mold

Yes, it really is as scary as it looks and sounds. Watch out for black mold!

If this is your first time at the Water Damage Rodeo, you may not have heard about black mold and all the dangers associated with it. If you’ve been there before, welcome back, and we’re sorry. Black mold in the home can pose serious health concerns, and it’s important to have it taken care of as quickly and swiftly as possible. Here’s a brief rundown on the least-fun fungus around — black mold.

What is Black Mold?

Black mold, more formally known as Stachybotrys chartarum, is one of the most common forms of household mold, and is quite dangerous if not properly and quickly eliminated. It has a greenish-black hue as ominous as its name, and is usually slimy due to a wet top layer. Not all dark-colored molds are the black mold — a trained water damage expert will be able to tell the difference. No matter what type of mold, you should have an expert come assess and solve the problem at the first sight of it.

Black Mold Symptoms

Black mold isn’t always immediately visible, as water damage is liable to occur in places that you don’t have visual access to on a regular basis. Here are some symptoms that might be a result of black mold in your home.

  • Skin inflammation
  • Hemorrhaging
  • Respiratory problems
  • Irritation of mucous membranes
  • Mental impairment
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Immune system suppression
  • Damage to internal organs

Note that these symptoms aren’t only caused by black mold. However, if you’re concerned, it’s never a bad idea to have your home screened for mold.

Eliminating Black Mold

As with all types of mold and other fungi that may manifest themselves in your home, the best route to take for eradication is to call in a trained water damage or mold specialist. They will come equipped with the tools and knowledge necessary to ensure that the problem is fully taken care of. Untrained attempts at this may not be totally effective, leaving you still vulnerable to health concerns. Remember to act quickly if you suspect mold growth, as prolonged exposure increases the chances and severity of associated health risks.
