An Important Reminder About the Dangers of Mold

People frequently encounter warnings about dangerous mold, and these warnings should not be ignored. While not all mold can cause serious health issues and death, you don’t want to find out the mold in your home is dangerous before it’s too late. No mold is good mold, so when you have mold (often a result of water damage) in your home, make sure to call your ServiceMaster of Baltimore right away.

Mold Water Damage

Mold spreads very quickly. In most cases, however, mold growth may not become visible for several days.

How is mold dangerous?

Some molds are toxigenic, so they produce toxins that can cause serious issues when inhaled. Even non-life threatening mold toxins can cause respiratory irritation and allergies due to these toxins. Rarely, although possible, mold toxins can cause memory loss, pulmonary hemorrhage, pneumonia, and other respiratory illnesses.

Is mold common?

Mold is very common, especially as a result of water damage (think floods, roof leaks, etc.) While not all molds are noticeable or cause respiratory illnesses, they should never be ignored. They are commonly found in places with consistent exposure to moisture, including bathrooms.

Will I know if there is mold in my home?

Most likely, yes. Mold can be seen and also has an odor. However, sometimes mold grows in seldom-frequented places, like attics and basements. You should inspect areas of your home that may be subject to moisture regularly for mold. Water damage is one major culprit, so if you’ve recently had flooding or other water damage issues, keep on the lookout for mold.

If you suspect or see mold, or have health issues you believe may be related to mold, you should call to have the mold removed immediately. Health issues, regardless of their origins, should be inspected by a medical professional. If you feel the mold situation in your home may be dangerous, vacate and call ServiceMaster of Baltimore.
