What to Do After Water Damage Cleanup

after water damage

When we leave, there’s still some water damage cleanup for you to do.

There’s nothing fun about dealing with water damage. Hopefully you were able to call us before the damage got too bad, and hopefully you did a good job with following the steps for what to do while you wait for us to show up. If acted upon quickly, water damage can be limited, but is still an inconvenience. To round out the fun-filled water damage experience, here are some things you should do after water damage to keep your home and health in good shape.

Dry Everything Out Completely

This is something we’ll help make sure of before we go, but you should be aware of the necessity. Whether it’s hanging rugs out to dry, blowing fans in the room (or rooms) affected, or letting appliances totally air dry before plugging them back in, you want to be 100% sure that there’s no residual dampness. Because as we all know, dampness leads to mold. Speaking of mold…

Keep an Eye Out for Mold

Sometimes, even despite best efforts, some amount of residual moisture hangs around after water damage. It could be under carpet, it could be hiding in the ceiling, it could be anywhere. After water damage, be extra vigilant about mold awareness for a while. You may be able to see the dark-colored fungus growing, or it may be hidden within your home’s structure. If you smell a musty, earthy odor, give us a call for mold remediation. Pro Tip: to help prevent mold growth, once everything is all dried out, disinfecting your home as well as possible will kill a lot of mold-causing bacteria that may be lingering after water damage.

Say Goodbye to Damaged Items Responsibly

It may be easiest just to throw everything into a dumpster to be hauled away, but there are better options. Responsibility means both sorting out items that can be recycled as well as keeping a calm head in this time of potential frustration and taking care not to throw out any important or cherished salvageable items in your cleaning frenzy.

Dealing with water damage is tough. We’ll take care of the hard part, and hopefully these tips will help you take care of the rest. Remember, if you have any type of water damage, never hesitate to give us a call.
