Spring is finally here, which means many families are starting their spring cleaning routines, dusting off their summer clothes, and getting ready for the warmer weather. ServiceMaster of Baltimore knows how helpful it is to have checklists and reminders for how to take care of your home, so here are 5 things to include in your spring cleaning routine this year. Which one will you tackle first?
1. Change Your HVAC Filters
Your home’s HVAC system works hard to circulate air throughout your home, and you can keep it running as efficiently as possible by changing the filter. You can see how much dust the system prevents from getting into your home by looking at how dirty the filter is when you replace it. Most manufacturers provide instructions on how often to change it out, but if not, you should switch it every three to six months. A good way to remember when to change the HVAC filter is to change it when the season changes.
2. Clean Exterior Windows and Doors
The cold winter wind carries dirt and debris, so if you’ve noticed that your windows and doors look cloudy from the inside, it’s probably time to clean the exterior glass. You can find large squeegee and brush tools at hardware stores to tackle this job efficiently so you don’t waste paper towels trying to remove months of caked-on dirt.
3. Vacuum Vents and Exhaust Fans
Another place that often gets overlooked are the items directly overhead: ceiling fans, exhaust vents, and HVAC vents. These areas can hold a lot of dust and dirt, and can prevent your HVAC system and exhaust fans from working properly. Simply vacuum the vents and you will probably notice an immediate difference in how clean your home looks and feels.
4. Check Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors can save lives in the event of a fire or carbon monoxide emergency. Most homes have hardwired smoke detectors, but you’ll still need to check the backup batteries and make sure they are working correctly. It is recommended to check these twice a year when the clocks change for Daylight Saving Time. It could save your life!
5. Clean Large Appliances
When was the last time you moved your refrigerator and oven out from the wall and removed all the dust and missing pet toys from underneath? These areas tend to harbor dust and dirt that can contribute to allergies and poor air quality in the home. Spring cleaning time is also a good time to clean out your dryer vent and washer to keep them running efficiently and safely. Over time, lint can build up in the dryer vent and cause a fire hazard, and mildew can turn to mold in a washer that has not been cleaned.
