4 Ways To Prevent Your Basement From Flooding

baltimore water restorationAs spring approaches, so does the season of rain. Although this may be good for your flowers, it’s not so good for your basement. As a homeowner, it’s important to prepare your home for rain to prevent flooding and water damage. You don’t want to get stuck with costly remediation services. Here are 4 simple ways to prevent your basement from flooding.

Clean Your Gutters

One of the easiest ways you can prevent your basement from flooding is by cleaning your gutters and downspouts. This should be done on a regular basis, especially during the changing seasons. Leaves and debris build up in these areas, which can lead to clogs. As winter changes to spring, be sure to clean these areas of your home. Clogged gutters and downspouts can cause rain water to overflow onto the sides of your home. This overflow can seep into your basement. Your downspout should be directing water at least 5 feet away from your home.

Utilize A Sump Pump

If you know that your basement floods, it’s a good idea to install a sump pump. If you already have a sump pump, you’ll want to have it serviced to make sure it’s working properly. This machine pushes water away from your home to prevent your basement from flooding. It also helps keep any existing flooding under control, preventing serious water damage.

Install A French Drain

Another way you can prevent your basement from flooding is by installing a french drain. This drainage system provides water with a channel to flow through. The rain water flows through a gravel-filled trench and eventually into a perforated pipe. The water is then drained out of the pipe away from your house.

Inspect Your Foundation

Believe it or not, the plants around your home could be contributing to the flooding of your basement. If they’re too close to the foundation, their roots might be causing cracks and allowing water in, causing your basement to flood. It’s a good idea to take a walk around the outside of your home to check for cracks in the foundation. If you find cracks, they can be filled with epoxy. You’ll also need to move your plants farther away from your home to prevent your basement from flooding any further.
