Deal With Melted Snow

Snow is very common during the winter, but it can do severe damage to your home if the right prevention tactics are not in place.  When snow is more than six inches deep on top of your roof, it is wise to remove it is as quickly as possible.  Heavy amounts of snow can damage your roof leaving you with costly repairs.  You should also shovel any snow away from your home to prevent it from melting and seeping into your foundation.

Prevent Frozen Pipes

When preparing your home for the winter, you should inspect your pipes and make sure they are properly insulated.  The last thing you want is water in your pipes to freeze then bursting causing severe water damage in your home.  You should check your pipes for any cracks or external damage and seal them up as needed.  Make sure to wrap exposed pipes in insulation material such as foam rubber or fiberglass sleeves.  If you are leaving your home for more than two days, make sure to leave the heat on to prevent your pipes from freezing.

Check Your Attic

One of the best ways to prevent water damage in your home is to check your attic for improper insulation and ventilation.  If your attic is not ventilated and insulated properly, then warm air will escape causing snow to melt off your roof to then refreeze forming ice dams.  Ice dams can cause serious water damage in your home, so it is critical to inspect your attic.  Properly insulating your attic will prevent hear from reaching your attic.
