It is common for people to accumulate items overtime.  However, you need to make sure clutter is not taking over your home.  Hoarding is a classified psychological disorder which is closely related to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD.)  Hoarding can negatively impact the safety of you and your family.  If you or someone you know suffers from hoarding disorder, then you should contact the professionals at ServiceMaster of Baltimore to assist in clearing out your home.  If you are not a hoarder but need help decluttering your home, then you should follow these tips:

Go Room By Room

If you want to empty your home of clutter, it is effective if you focus on one room at a time.  You do not want to overwhelm yourself by trying to clean two rooms at once. It is best if you start by clearing out the smallest room.  Make sure to clear all of the trash in each room and go from top to bottom of each room. You want to take to your time in each room so that you do not stress yourself out.

Safety First

If you have a room that is consumed by trash and other items, you need to make sure you are safe when clearing out the space.  It is best that you use rubber gloves and wear a mask when entering the room. Make sure that you use a flashlight so that you can see every inch of the space clearly.  If you suspect there is mold in a room, then contact the specialists at ServiceMaster immediately.

Discard Unused Items

People tend to keep items that they might use in the future such as cookbooks or sporting items.  These items can pile up and consume your household. It is best that you get rid of any item that you know you will never use.  Try to donate these items to your nearest Goodwill or charity organization. As the saying goes “One person’s trash, is another person’s treasure!”
