3 Tips To Preparing Your Home For A Natural Disaster

Know how to prepare your for an impending natural disaster.

Depending on where you live, natural disasters such as flooding and hurricanes can be a common occurrence.  The last thing you want to do is to put in money for costly repairs everytime hurricane season comes around.  You want to put time and energy into creating a plan where your family and home come out safe after a natural disaster comes through.  Luckily, there are a few simple ways to prepare your home for a natural disaster.

Know The Weak Areas

When it comes to preparing your home for a natural disaster, it is essential that you know of the areas that need the most protection.  In many homes, the windows and roof are the areas most susceptible to storm damage, so you need to focus your attention on them. If your area is prone to hurricanes, it is best that you invest in storm shutters for your windows.  You can even use roof straps to make sure that your shingles stay in place during a windstorm.

Make An Emergency Kit

One of the main aspects you need to focus on is creating an emergency kit so that you and your family can survive a natural disaster.  You and your family should have all the essentials to withstand a blackout or evacuate if necessary. A basic emergency kit should contain three days worth of food and water, flashlight, cell phone with chargers, and cash.  You want to pack items that meet the needs of any children, pets, and medical concerns.

Focus On Food

During a natural disaster, you want to make sure you and your family have enough to eat at least for a few days.  Severe flooding or a snowstorm will prevent you from leaving your home, so you want to make sure you and your family are fed.  If your home is going to be victim to flooding, make sure that you store of your dry food in waterproof containers in a high place far away from contaminated water.  It is wise to have several coolers full of ice so that you can store items in case of a power outage.
