3 Simple Ways To Prevent Winter Water Damage

Learn how to prevent water damage this winter.

We are at the beginning of December, which means we are a few weeks from the official start of winter.  The winter season brings frigid temperatures and the potential for heavy snowfall.  The increase of inclement weather also enhances the risk of water damage during the winter.  You need to ensure that your home is structurally sound from the inside out.  Luckily, there are a few simple ways to prevent water damage this winter.

Check and Insulate Your Pipes

Depending on the age and condition of your home, your pipes might be susceptible to freezing and leaks during the winter.  You want to make sure any exterior walls and exposed pipes in your home are well-insulated so that you can prevent pipes from freezing.  The pressure from frozen pipes can cause the structure to burst which can cause serious water damage in your home. So, you need to install caulking to patch up any leaks in your exterior walls.  Make sure you wrap insulation tape around any exposed pipes during the winter.

Invest In A Leak Detection System

When it comes to preventing water damage this winter, it might be best to install a water leak detection system in your home.  If you are away from your home frequently due to travel, you should invest in a detection system because it can alert you of any change in moisture in your home.  You can goto your local home improvement store and choose from a wide range of systems. You can install sensors near your appliances and water heat, and they will sound an alarm when they detect a change in moisture.  There are some systems that will turn off your water valves if there is a noticeable change in water use.

Clear Out Your Gutters

If you haven’t already, make sure to clear out your gutters of any leaves and debris before a heavy snowfall arrives.  The last thing you want is for water to freeze in your gutters because the system is clogged. This can cause an ice dam to form which damage your gutters and the rest of your home severely.
