3 Easy Ways To Prevent Home Water Damage

Prevent water damage in your home by following these simple steps.

Prevent water damage in your home by following these simple steps.

No one wants to deal with the repercussions of a busted water pipe or cracked roofing during a rainstorm.  Water damage can permanently affect the structure of your home as well as cause mold to grow on your carpets and upholstery.  Repairing and cleaning up water damage is an expensive process that no one wants to go through.  There are simple steps you can enact to prevent water damage in your home.

Unclog Sinks and Gutters

Make sure you inspect all of your sinks and outside gutters for proper drainage and go through the steps to dissolve any clog that may appear.  For bathroom and kitchen sinks, use a drain snake to relieve clogs.  Using chemicals like Drano might be an efficient method, but constant use can eat away at your pipes.  A drain snake is an inexpensive method to unclog your drain without damaging your pipes.  Having a clogged gutter will cause water to spew down the sides of your house, damaging your siding and foundation.  Clean your gutters regularly and make sure water is directed 5 to 10 feet away from your foundation.  Having your yard sloped away from your home is the best way to prevent water damage whenever your gutter drains.

Check On Your Water Bill

One of the best ways to discover a leak in your home is to keep an eye on your monthly water bill.  There are so many hidden pipes in your home that you might not know there is a leak until there is permanent damage.  If your monthly bill is unusually high, that is a sign that you have a pipe leak.  Contact your local contractor and get your pipes inspected.

Never Pour Grease Down the Sink

This one might be obvious, but it is never a good idea to dispose of food grease down the sink.  The substance can cling to your pipes and cause some serious damage, regardless if trying to break it down with detergent or hot water.  It is best to keep it in a can and store it in the refrigerator after cooking.  Once it is hard, just toss it in the trash can.
